A sailing adventure with the dhow : The project PDF Print E-mail

The project goal is to sail Nizwa, from UAE to France.
By sailing in different seas, especially the Red Sea, the trip will be a historical adventure for two reasons:

  • With her lateen sails, Nizwa remains (even with recent refurbishment) a traditional dhow. Sailing conditions for the voyage will be the same as they would have been in past times.
  • This dhow has been purchased by a French Expatriate in the UAE. With his team, he decided to bring the boat back to France in order to provide French citizens with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the history and heritage of the Gulf countries.

Navigation and cultural aspect

The program is unique and original due to following aspects:

  • The navigation : this will be the first time that a traditional dhow has sailed from the Gulf Sea to France
  • The cultural aspect: Jocelyn would like to show part of the history and culture of the Gulf countries to French citizens who do not often have the opportunity to visit these countries.

Description

With 5,000 nautical miles to sail, the itinerary will be:

After getting out of Gulf Sea through Hormuz strait, the dhow will sail in the Oman Sea, into Aden’s gulf, and then will head towards North Red Sea to reach the Suez
Canal.

Then, she will be sailing in the Mediterranean Sea from Port Said to Marseille in France, the final destination.

ImageIn order to benefit from down-winds of the winter monsoon season, the departure is planned on January 10th, 2008.

Nizwa’s arrival in France is expected to be in May 2008.
