Nizwa, a traditionnal dhow PDF Print E-mail

Nizwa is one of the last dhow built in “Sur”, in the Sultanate of Oman and used as a fishing boat.

She was bought by Jocelyn Pierre in 2003 who then began a complete renovation including adding traditional lateen sails, thereby keeping her traditional aspect and characteristics. The work has lasted for 2 years and has taken place in a local yard in Ajman, UAE.

A sailing adventure with the dhow PDF Print E-mail

The project goal "Nizwa in the secret of the red sea" is to sail with Nizwa from UAE to France.
By sailing in different seas, especially the Red Sea, the trip will be a historical adventure for two reasons:

  • With her lateen sails, Nizwa remains (even with recent refurbishment) a traditional dhow. Sailing conditions for the voyage will be the same as they would have been in past times.
  • This dhow has been purchased by a French Expatriate in the UAE. With his team, he decided to bring the boat back to France in order to provide French citizens with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the history and heritage of the Gulf countries.

The departure took place on the 21st of January 2008 in Ajman.

After 3500 miles of sailing adventure, the captain and the crew decided to make a pause in Egypt. Nizwa is now resting in a marina in Hurghada.

Time is needed to prepare the voyage in the mediteranean sea. Indeed, the boat need some reparations but also new sails : we are looking for new sponsors willing to help us.

With the help of our partners, we will prepare this new adventure. We will also recruit a new crew.

Do not hesitate to contact the association if you think you can help.
